UElection.com started as an individual effort by Mohammad Al-Meer, to collect and display the results of Kuwait University elections in both tabular and graphical format. Few years after, The Dean of Student Affairs arranged with him to make it the official university elections website, and now, you can get live update on the election results during vote counts.

This year also, the results started showing up on the big screens in some colleges, such as the college of Business & Administration.

However, I was surprised to see the small growth, and also decline in number of domains recently. As the way I see it, online business in Kuwait is just starting to boom.

Kuwait Fire Stats Online

I was just listening today to Deera Chat podcast about information accessibility, and how we lack such kind of information, and what we lose from missing those information. So I thought it’s the right time to write about what I saw at the Kuwait Firefighters site. Something that is really special about this site, and I thank them for it, is the updated online stats of fires in Kuwait since 2003. Every month, up till September so far, they post monthly reports on the fires in Kuwait. Detailed ones with such kind of information:

Fires categorized per area
Fires handled by which Fire Station
Type of fire (residential, non-residential)
Cause of fire. Mostly Electricity good to know.
Percentage of false calls, reportedly increasing
Death and injuries stats.

I promise you can also find and make a lot more from those information. And yes guys, we need more and more of those information accessible online. I always recall a bit old but very informative book from Bill Gates: Business @ The Speed of Thought, if you are interested. It talks about how you should digitize all your information, make it accessible to all online easily, and tie all the different information together. It speaks about what he calls the Digital Nervous System, and I’m still grateful to my friend who suggested it.

Salary Increase Report in Kuwait and the Gulf

GulfTalent have issued a 22 pages Gulf salary increase report that is rich of useful information. The report download requires small registration, but don’t worry about spam mail, I don’t receive so many emails from them. This is the only one in months. The report is long and has a section for each country, but some of the interesting graphs are posted below:

As you can see, Gulf salary increase is accelerating overall in the last year.

As I always say, construction is the future of the Gulf. Not any other sector. See the tall, huge and massive buildings and projects in Dubai and you will know. Qatar, Kuwait and others are trying to catch up as well. I was surprised though from the low salary increase in telecom though. In Kuwait that is not so true as I know.

Engineering is being paid highest of salaries, followed by HR and finance. Wonder if being in control of things have anything to do with the high payment of salary. This doesn’t apply to all ofcourse, but I have seen with my own eyes people in HR with nothing much and not even any strong degree to back up and they were getting double my salary as computer engineer.

So Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are at the bottom of salary increases this year (Zedo Al-m3ashat! . But don’t rush in judgment before you read the rest of the report. Other statistics in the same report show average rent increase in Oman and Qatar have reached %29, and the rent forms %35 of the salary in Qatar, so over all, their net profit is going down faster than us. If we are talking about HUGE salaries however, like 10,000 KD. Then I wouldn’t mind their living ofcourse. I still win in the end . As for the expat workforce, it forms %90 of UAE and %89 of Qatar (I don’t know if they count the people who got nationality there ). With that percentage compared to the percentage of expats not saving, you will see that %41 of those expats in UAE are not saving. I.e., approximately %37 of UAE people are not able to save money. Still wanna live in Dubai?
